He grew up hunting, fishing, and hiking in the Snake River canyons and Blue Mountains of southeastern Washington. He has been the executive editor of Washington Trails magazine, is currently both a reporter for Seattle Times "Outdoors" section and a regular contributor to magazines, including Men's Journal, Backpacker, and Outside. Dan has written many of the state's most popular guidebooks such as Mountaineers Books' own Best Hikes with Dogs: Washington, Snowshoe Routes Washington, and several of the Day Hiking series guides.
