She happened to be a peaceful, benevolent sort and allowed a friendly relationship to evolve, on her turf and terms, and then she learned to talk. He found that she had surprising emotions in addition to the ability to think and reason. When it became necessary to terminate the relationship, the man suffered considerable emotional duress, but he never even once guessed the emotional agony he left behind.
