Spaniards first settled here on the north coast of Atlantic Florida in 1565, and for centuries after the fortressed city of St. Augustine was a focal point of wars between cultures and equally challenging engagements between people and the tropical environment. By the end of the 19th century, St. Augustine was also a tourist destination, adding another layer of architectural style to the dramatic visual history that abounds in the city today.
