A new baby



Alicia's world has spun in a million different directions. Not long before she had to overcome the mystery of her grandmother suddenly disappearing from her life, now not only has her grandmother returned, but so has Nicolas, her grandfather. The secret of Alicia's true nature, one of the last surviving conjurers, is out of the bag, and everyone has an opinion about it. Benjamin, Alicia's father, is not surprised by the news but he is determined to protect her, and make sure she is the most normal life that she can. Althea, Alicia's grandmother cautions her that with her abilities comes great responsibility, and that she must never overlook how dangerous they could become. Nicolas is determined to train Alicia, so that she will know how to use her abilities to protect herself.



Alicia's only refuge from the chaos of her life is the secret place she and Matthew have been meeting. He has quickly become her only friend, and although Alicia feels as if he may be something even more than that, the two have been forbidden to see each other. To add to her already confusing and drama filled life, Alicia finds out that she is going to be a big sister.



The last thing she wants is a sibling to replace her. She thinks that her parents will be so focused on the new baby that they will forget all about her. Alicia secretly feels that they might want to, since having a conjurer for a daughter was proving to be more trouble than it was worth.



As she struggles with the truth about herself, she spends much of her time wishing everything could go back to normal. No more training, where her abilities are becoming more and more frightening. No more Matthias glowering at her with the same judgment that he had when he was just a teenager himself. When she discovers the truth, that Matthias does not want her around Matthew because he thinks Alicia is far too dangerous, she does not want to admit how hurt she is. All she wants is a chance to be the Alicia she once was. Cheerful, happy, and busy with school and friends. Not the Alicia she had become, isolated, frightened, and lost in the emotions she could not understand.



When Matthias confronts her about how her emotions are directly tied to her abilities, Alicia is determined to prove to him that she can control herself. Unfortunately, she does not realize that even as she is declaring she would never harm anyone, she has already harmed Matthias. In the middle of an emotional outburst Alicia behaves so out of character that she draws the attention of her father.
