Infantryman Jim Nelson discovers that he can escape the pain of torture at the hands of the Vietcong through hallucinations, popping in and out of them at will to have sex with an old girlfriend, visit his wife and daughter and explore old college haunts. He becomes trapped in this imaginary world and God sends an angel to help find a way back. But Jim is not sure he wants to return to reality, even after he has been rescued.
