Jasmines mother was rapped and abused by her father, shortly her mother was with child. Jasmine has never set eyes on her mother, as a matter of a fact; Jasmine thinks her mother was killed in a car crash, on a stormy night. Aunt Kelly struggles with keeping the shocking truth from Jasmine for two reasons, fear of how her church family may view her, and two fear of Jasmine having some kind of mental break down. Jasmine wakes up every day mad at the world because she sits and watch, others hugging there mother and she's not being able to share that equal feeling.
