This collection of five books represent Francois Fénelon's outstanding teachings on prayer, suffering, the achievement of virtue, and other spiritually crucial tenets.

The five texts are as follows:

Book One is a lengthy essay pertaining to Christian counsels; the moral and spiritual underpinnings of Christianity.

Book Two is a collection of short letters, each of which concern a topic pertinent to spiritual seekers.

Book Three comprises a lengthy and diverse discussion of prayer, in the context of topics such as holy virtue, sin, and attaining closeness to the divine.

Book Four details, by stages or degrees by through which believers ascend closer towards God.

Book Five, rounding off the treatises, is composed of a series of sixty maxims which believers are to hold close to heart.

Uniting aspects of philosophy with Christian theology and spiritualist thought, Fénelon presents here a lively set of treatises where esoteric knowledge and concepts are put to singular good purpose: enhancing and informing the spiritual life of the reader. Although at times arcane, the advice given is rooted in the Christian tradition and scriptures.

Fénelon never attained mainstream popularity as an author during or after his life, however he was and remains a favorite of scholars and religious adherents seeking to explore the deepest channels of their faith. Although more difficult than other inspirational authors, Fénelon's authenticity and depth cannot be doubted.
