Matthew Kronk often doesn't know how to speak to his grandfather. Lucas Kronk lives in a nursing home and can't always recognize his family. Instead, he sits in his wheelchair and watches the Cubs. It's always the Cubs.



When Matthew triggers Lucas's memory by talking about Chicago's beloved baseball team, Lucas begins reminiscing about his life. In the story that follows, Lucas shows how his destiny has been entwined with that of the team since the very beginning.



In 1908, Lucas is only five years old. His father works in the Chicago meatpacking industry, and his mother stays home to take care of Lucas and his little sister, Emma Lou. At the breakfast table, Lucas listens closely to his father's pronouncements about Mordecai Brown and other Cubs players. He wants nothing more in life than to see the Cubs win the World Series.



Actually, Lucas wants two things in life. He wants the Cubs to win the World Series, and he wants a brand-new penny-farthing bicycle.
