This devotional commentary on the book of Ruth is the fourth in Dr. Parker's series "Expository Thoughts." Other books in this series are Expository Thoughts on Joshua, Expository Thoughts on 1 Samuel, and Expository Thoughts on James. Dr. Parker has always believed that Bible study that does not get down to the level of affecting the heart is very limited at best, and sometimes even dangerous. Intellectual Bible study generally puffs one up. Bible study is not primarily intended to inform, although it does inform. Bible study is primarily for the purpose of bringing us to the place of heart surrender to the wonderful God Who so staggeringly reveals Himself in His Word. This devotional study of Ruth takes the student through the entire text of the book, passage by passage, seeking to simply along with the biblical pattern for Bible study given in Nehemiah 8:8, where see that the teachers "read in the book of the law of God distinctly, and gave the sense, and caused them to understand the reading." This is a very precious book revealing, as it does, so much of the staggering wonder of the redemptive will of God for His people. As we move along through the pages of this divine revelation, short as it is, we will encounter what may be the most stunning Old Testament revelation of the fact that the redemptive love of God in Jesus Christ brings the believing child of God into the center of all the will of God. We shall also come to see that this redemptive love of God crosses all barriers and is operative even in the very darkest of hours.
