With her father dead and her step-mother trying to get her inheritance, 20-year-old Dria Davis leaves her home in Bakersfield, California in search of her grandmother's cousin near Fisk, Missouri. But when she almost hits a 3-year-old child following her dog out into the highway, she finds a temporary job and a safe place to stay. There she meets the child's admirable father who sees her as an excellent mother for his child. She also meets eccentric survivalist Forrest Hunter and she knows immediately that she finds him both vividly attractive and seriously unsuitable. Dria is a dedicated Christian and Forrest has lost his faith. She firmly plans to keep her distance but circumstances continually bring them together. As time and events move on, Dria is faced with a serious decision.
