Let's Learn the Samoan Alphabet
Gerard Aflague
Let's Learn the Samoan Alphabet is a fun soft-cover book that offers adults the tools to teach children to learn the full Samoan alphabet. Samoan is a unique language belonging to the natives of Samoa in Polynesia. The glottal stop, vowels, as well as consonants are presented and further elaborated in examples uniquely crafted on each page. There are over 40 pages in total. Each symbol in the Samoan alphabet is displayed in 3D wood illustrations, together with an associated colorful image that represents that letter in Samoan. Each alphabet is shown on the left side of the page, including word of choice and phonetic pronunciation. The complimentary image with accompanying narratives are on the facing pages to further discuss the alphabets individually. Interactive discussions between adults and children are important to further solidify the understanding of what is being seen and read. To ensure that the child focuses on each symbol in the Samoan alphabet, we used both facing pages to introduce one concept, building on this understanding, before moving on to the next page to introduce the next alphabet symbol.
