In 2198, Americans live and die by the wires. Wires connect them to electronic devices, strangling free thought and independent action. Human beings now act like puppets: vapid, complacent, and controlled by their strings.



Bree McAnderson grew up away from such technology but understands its harmful effects all too well. She hates the society that separated her from her mother and forced her to attend a boarding school for troubled teens. Bree does her best to withstand the bullying and cruelty, but they take their toll. Every night when she tries to sleep, she sees monsters in the dark.



Then Bree discovers the truth behind her mother's work and her own identity and realizes that monsters don't just exist in her imagination. They stalk the streets of New York City and want to destroy her. Bree escapes from her school and dodges assassins, but she knows that they will chase her down and make her pay.



Then she learns about a rebellion dedicated to ending technology's thrall over humanity. And the rebels think she may give them their best chance at destroying the evil corporation that's calling the shots. Bree's got nothing to lose by helping them-or does she?
