A chronicle of two Eastern-bred families, the Smiths and the Gilmans, intent on settling in California . . . while traveling by separate means and experiencing different adventures and perils, they both settled, providentially, in the San Gorgonio Pass, California, on lands less than a dozen miles apart. One of the Smith daughters, Martha, would eventually marry James G. Gilman, owner of the Gilman property. Thus, the two families were intrinsically bound.
