Evolution doesn't favor long life. It favors long youth. A young brain thinks faster with smaller size, thus it consumes less energy to reach better results than an adult one. A young brain is also less aggressive than the adult one. In cooperation less aggressive people managed to produce more food. As a result there were less reasons to fight for food. The relative importance of aggressiveness went down. To achieve these results evolution favored those individuals, which brains stayed young for longer time. Scientists came across this phenomena when they looked for reasons, why the human brain has been getting smaller since the Stone Age. The Immortals have many names: outlivers - for living longer; artians - for being artificial, outlovers - for being obsessed with love. Yet, they are simple people - mostly teenagers and kids, which happened to get into the middle of the new evolutionary leap. In this book they have to deal with the entire human race raising against them as well as just try to live their lives according to their values.
