Beth, a foundling with no blood relations and few prospects, was moving on from her adopted home to Kansas, where she expected to marry the ranch owner, a friend of her adopted father. She accepted the company of a personable young doctor, Clint, who was riding the same route. His brother Morgan, a one-time Cheyenne captive and an altogether wilder individual, joined them on the trail, and Beth became embroiled in their search for their sister, still an Indian captive. On reaching the Kansas ranch, she realised life married to a man whom she did not love was not a future she desired, so she ran away and was ultimately rescued by Morgan. She accompanied the brothers across the frontier wilderness and she fell in love. Morgan, however, was a rootless drifter and he didn't believe they could make things work. Her adventures and experiences with the Kincade brothers were an emotional rough ride ranging from the peaks of happiness to the depths of despair. Could this unconventional and, in the eyes of society, rather unseemly relationship ever have a happy ending?
