When Jesus speaks of the Kingdom, he is showing us where we are going. God's Kingdom is about RELATIONSHIP, with him as creatures, as servants of our Lord, God and King, with the one whom Jesus reveals as Father. Of course, it is also with Jesus himself. God's Kingdom is also inseparably about kingdom-shaped relationships with everyone else. Secondly, Jesus' Kingdom is about COMMUNITY, about relationships brought to fulfillment in community, about life together in the family of the Father, the community life of Jesus' little flocks of kingdom servants. Thirdly, Jesus' Kingdom is about the way of life called DISCIPLESHIP, the life of his followers, not as a mere collection of individuals, but as a little-flock community. Jesus' wonderful teaching of the crowds created sparks but not disciples. Only a day-in-day-out life with Jesus and other disciples can achieve that end. God's Kingdom means relationship. Kingdom relationships mean community. Moreover, Kingdom community requires good old on-the-job training in discipleship. Jesus still calls us afresh to follow. His call is unsettling yet full of breathtaking promise.
