In 1864 Georgia, a young widow's troubles escalate when she finds a wounded Union soldier in her barn. Millie, a compassionate woman, realizes the danger of harboring a soldier in the midst of the raging civil war. However, she summons her courage and faces her fears with determination. She lives with her children on an isolated 100-acre farm. Reluctantly, she befriends and cares for his wounds until the Union troops overtake the area. When he leaves, Millie is perplexed at the emotions she feels. Twenty-five years later, Josh now a widower, visits post-war Atlanta and discovers Millie is a successful business woman with a prosperous farm. They renew their friendship and conflict is born of the sudden romance between them. The opposition if their children creates a host of obstacles to overcome before the two families can unite.
