Euripides is identified with theatrical innovations that have profoundly influenced drama & plays down to modern times. He was unique among the writers of ancient & medieval Athens for the sympathy he demonstrated towards all victims of society, including women. Hippolytus is a Greek tragedy which is set in Troezen, a coastal town in the northeastern Peloponnese. Theseus, the king of Athens, is serving a year's voluntary exile after having murdered a local king and his sons. His illegitimate son Hippolytus, whose birth is the result of Theseus's rape of Amazon Hippolyta. Hippolytus has been trained since childhood by the king of Troezen, Pittheus.
