America in the 1950s evokes images of innocence, peace, and prosperity-house after suburban house with two parents and 3.5 kids. Just under the surface, though, was unease and even paranoia about nuclear war, espionage, and polio. The '50s, with the advent of interstate highways, television, fast food, and motels, and the stirring of the civil rights movement, were turbulent in their own way.
