"Laurence stood with his hands upon the cool iron of the outer fence of the lion cages. The big male apparently had seen him and was thwanging his bars with one and then the other big paw. When he roared, the others down the line would join in a supportive chorus of despair and rage. The lion seemed to be roaring right at him. Laurence opened his mouth and screamed back as loudly as he could, screamed until he emptied his lungs. When the male lion roared, he answered him, was one with him."
