The Void
Kiomars Eric Fiazi
A collection of short stories and a play. These short stories are very different from each other. They deal with the unconscious part of man; therefore, the characters, as well as the incidents, are completely fictitious. They are fictitious in the sense that the characters are not enjoying some of the regular human being's motives, needs, or passions. These are truly surrealistic works where the author takes complete liberty with his characters. Throughout each story, anything and everything is possible. Limitations of logic, reality, or rationality do not apply. It is truly a collection of fantasy writing. In a very remote way, most of the stories are autobiographical. Each episode of the autobiographical information is turned into an abstract version of the episode and given to a man, a woman, an animal, or a phenomenon to play the part. It is important to know that the reader does not need to know whether the stories are autobiographical or not. What is important is to internalize the story so that one can see on a subconscious level that "IT APPLIES" to anyone. One aspect of the story that is very pleasing is that it is created to be poetic in style and to reach all humans regardless of cultural diversities. The play, in its own turn, deals with very basic issues that every person has to confront. The issues are of faith, reason, and various elements of these two. The reader experiences a challenging endeavor to examine these concepts. The idea of the play originated from the characters from a story by Herman Hesse, Narcissus and Goldmund. The play follows these characters after their death and imagines what the world could be. It is a unique pursuit of what we may hold in our unconscious about death.
