The 1973 Yom Kippur Middle-East War occurred when the Nixon White House was in chaos because of the collapsing Watergate cover-up and operating on the belief that the Soviets had supplied nuclear weapons to Egypt to be fired at Israel. High level Soviet dissidents chose me-a visiting scientist-to carry documents back to the US in order to open a back channel to the US Government. How was I, untrained in espionage-to flee with documents proving the dissidents were turning against Soviet provocative actions? The KGB counter-intelligence knew a courier existed, but not who or where. Either I escaped or the dissidents had to arrange my death-or risk their own exposure.
