DCI Tony Dyce wakes with an erection, the first sign, though he is unaware of it, that he is being set up as the fall guy for the very set of serial murders he is investigating. The killer, who has successfully murdered a dozen prostitutes in other parts of the country and had their deaths attributed to others who are now imprisoned for the crimes, is the first Dyce has come across who never makes a mistake and only leaves clues to deliberately mislead or incriminate a third party.
