Julie, a young woman with a disquieting past in another country, is a teacher, devoted to the children she instructs, but in her life outside the schoolroom she is almost willfully unformed, passive, deliberately isolated from people and the pain they might bring. Into this empty life steps Victor, the intense young professor of philosophy whom Julie will love and who will guide her toward fulfillment of the "most urgent necessity"-becoming a human being.
