Keeley Chesson, a crime reporter for a city newspaper, is orphaned at age fourteen, courtesy of a sheriff's deputy who killed her parents and got away with it. Keeley is inside the house when her aunt and cousin are shot by two gunmen. She narrowly escapes detection, but is able to watch the men drive off. As they drive away she sees someone else in the truck-the killer's girlfriend who is also Keeley's best friend. Wracked with grief over the deaths of her relatives and her friend's betrayal, Keeley vows to get justice. She's afraid to call law enforcement because the killer's father has made sure his son never had to pay for anything he ever did. She feels she has to do it herself, and begins a quest for justice and revenge that puts her in danger of losing her own life.
