Bone marrow transplant (BMT): Is a procedure in which bone marrow that is diseased for ex. by cancer or damaged is replaced with healthy bone marrow/stem cell transplantation (SCT). The bone marrow to be replaced may be purposely destroyed by high doses of chemotherapy and/or radiation therapy. If the marrow is taking from the patient himself; it is called an A utologous marrow transplant but if it is from an identical twin; it is known as a S yngeneic transplant. While when the marrow is from a donor who is not an identical twin, the procedure is an A llogeneic transplant. Cord Blood Transplants is another new option for those without a matched donor using the blood from the umbilical cord of a newborn as the immune cells in cord blood are still "naïve," which have not yet become active in attacking other cells. This immaturity makes them less likely to attack the transplant recipient's tissues. Recently there is Embryonic stem cell transplant from the embryo with life of (3-5) days. Embryonic stem cells come from eggs that were fertilized at in vitro fertilization clinics but never implanted in a woman's uterus.
