Publisher Marketing: This book presents creativity sparking writing and sketching ideas to help young writers explore creative avenues in the writing process. By simply following the basic, #1 Rule of Writing: "There are no rules!" students can explore through their own imaginative and creative approaches. These activities are presented under the simple guidelines of: 1. Don't Think. 2. Don't Dwell. 3. Don't Judge. Just write. Writers, sometime, need permission (even encouragement) to fail. People need to realize that failure is not failure. Failure is part of the creative and learning process. "Write, right now." is a much better approach to writing than "Write right, now." How to write First of all, a brief note about the Rules of Writing: #1. There are no rules. #2. If you find a rule for writing, ignore it. #3. If the rule persists, break it. Just write. Now, for a few guidelines: 1. Don't think: Writers who are stuck, or who feel uncreative, are usually over-thinking the situation, not knowing what or how to write. Thinking is not writing. Writing is writing. Instead of wondering if you should write about a duck or a dog, start writing and see who shows up. 2. Don't dwell: Wondering if a certain thing belongs here or there, or if a color should be red or blue, or what kind of duck or dog it actually is, is not writing. Let the color, size, shape, etc., just do and be what it wants. 3. Don't Judge: Judging is editing (which is a great thing to be doing, later.) While you write, leave the judging (editing) outside, playing around in the woods or sand or backyard. Call him (or her) in later, when you're ready. Just write. Editing: Editing is not writing. Editing is editing, which means fixing those things that want fixing, such as spelling, punctuation, sentence structure, adjectives, adverbs, who said what and when, etc. Save the editing (you know, that guy you kicked out to the backyard or woods) for later. After you have written, then go to town with your editing. Give yourself freedom and permission to fail. Poor writing is a lot better than not writing. Horrible writing is way better than a blank page. Sloppy writing, clumsy writing, choppy writing can all be fixed. But before any fixing is possible, writing needs to happen in the first place. So, just write. Write, right now (is a much better approach than: Write right, now.) Right? or should I say Write? Just write.
