The fourth book in the Life on the Plains series continues to follow the life of Luke Henry. Machinery is introduced to the harvesting of crops which reduced the amount of help needed for the harvest and improved the yield significantly from the established ways of harvesting manually. A new breed of cattle is introduced to the Henry Ranch in the hope of producing a better quality of beef for the consumers back east than they had seen with the typical longhorn cattle that they had raised for many years. The lawlessness of the old west had virtually disappeared, but the law was represented by only a few lawmen on the plains, and the families continued to deal with those who attempted to take advantage of them. There were still people interested in taking things that did not belong to them, and the greed and dishonesty of the east was finding its way west also. The extended families on the plains always looked forward to helping each other and working together for the benefit of them all, but also enjoyed getting together as often as they could especially around the holidays.
