Chutney refers to a wide-ranging family of condiments popular in the South Asian cuisine. The term chutney is derived from the Sanskrit, a term for a class of spicy preparations used as an accompaniment for a main dish. Today the term ?chutney? encompasses many varieties. Chutneys may be either wet or dry, and they can have a coarse texture to a fine consistency. Certain chutneys can be stored several months, whereas others need consumption immediately based on the ingredients. A common misconception is that chutney?s are spiced and hot. There are several varieties which contain a mixture of spices and fruit(s) which are sweet.
