Back on Earth, they realize that years of living in artificial gravity have augmented their strength and senses. The U. S. is now ruled by militaristic corporations, including Eden, Inc., creator of the cosmic resort. Eden?s owner, Casper, believes that Ethan may derail plans to monopolize celestial real estate. Wright?s novel doesn?t skimp on the sci-fi details, but it also delivers exhilarating action sequences and espionage. An anti-big-business theme is made clear with allusions to corporate bailouts. The author smartly spends little time detailing the eight years in orbit, avoiding comparisons to other sci-fi stories of outer-space isolation; and he shows the pod?s crash landing from someone else?s perspective (a witty nod to UFOs), initially suggesting that the men are indeed aliens. Wright scores with memorable characters. Casper?s cronies, in fact, are supervillains to Ethan and his superhero abilities?The Crusher (whose name says it all), The Fly (a man strapped with a jet pack) and The Valkyrie (a formidable female assassin). The novel is further reinforced with shrewd allusions to the biblical Eden and stellar technological weapons, including nanobots and a Kevlar suit designed for stealth. There?s also humor throughout?though the paramount joke is the origin of the resort-destroying debris. A novel that never bows to formula, regaling with its creativity.
