Its central conflict is a classic one and concerns the struggle between the forces of light and darkness, between the desire for power for power's sake and the desire to defend the ideals of honor, law, and love, and between those who would preserve humanity and those who would sacrifice it. However, it also contains more modern complexities beneath its surface that readers may wish to return to after a first reading. What does it truly mean to be powerful? Do the ends ever justify the means? Are we fate's pawns or do we play a more active role in determining our destinies?
