The 41 Books
Franklin Helsinger
"O" is an aging psychologist, who grew tired of daily routines and re-doings. He decides to end it all by reading the last forty-one, unread books on his shelf, then enter his beloved books. This is for book-lovers, who are treated to psychological insights, and the visceral experience of reading. O is a modern day Don Quixote, since both men were psychologically-driven by their readings, and both tried to correct the wrongs among people in the world ---O as a psychologist, and Quixote by knight-errantry. O meets Freud, Quixote, and Cervantes; and ponders his own potential to create societal consequences, if he were to alter literature simply by reading and engaging with characters. The book is short. But, it is penetrating. Anything longer would have ruined the message and the charm. It is not until the very final word that the reader learns of the unexpected and surprising ending.
