Excited about their decision to move into a community predominately inhabited by followers of two similar religious faiths, who seek freedom to practice a centuries old religion of simplicity, Bob and Peggy, with their newborn daughter take up residence in the elegant home they have purchased. Quickly aware of their lack of ability to accomplish their original plan, the Garretts enter into an agreement with the young couple who inspired them to make the move. Free of restrictions on the use of their time, Bob and Peggy begin an earnest study of the Amish way of life and soon discover the subjects of the study are not much different from folks of other expressions of religion. An act of harassment by an outsider group of teenagers leads to the surprising development of a wonderful friendship with a person who helps the Garretts to become aware that everything is not always as idyllic in the community as visitors are led to believe.
