In the year of 1844, Ellie O'Neal is suddenly orphaned at the age of seventeen. She sells the family farm she lives on in Ohio to a neighbor and begins her dream of traveling to California. Hoping to join a wagon train in St. Louis, she travels by foot through Indiana and Illinois, trusting in God to guide her. The people she meets and the events that occur to try to change her mind are what gives this story life. Romance crops up but Ellie doesn't let it deter her from fulfilling her dream. Can she still her doubts and continue on? She is determined to survive on her own against all odds.
