For God, England & Ethel tells of one such squadron, seen through the eyes of Fred Johnstone, a lowly wireless mechanic, whose off-duty friendships are inextricably intertwined with his squadron duties. The story follows Fred through the two years he served on the Western Front, set against a back-drop of the ever-changing fortunes of Number 6 squadron. During this time, ambitions are realised and unlikely friendships forged, broken only by death. Based upon official records, eyewitness accounts and the diaries that Fred kept during his time in Belgium, this true story is testament to the strength, courage and resilience of a generation of young men, fighting on foreign soil for their God, their Country and their loved ones.
