The Vanquished tells the story of two young Americans who have returned to their ancestral home in rural Ohio. Through dissecting letters, photographs, and forgotten dreams they begin unraveling the story of Fielding Grey's unyielding love for his two strong daughters. Their lives are mapped out with precision by Fielding, but their idealism is shattered amidst the reality of the hellish trenches of World War I, the ensuing Red Scare, and the distant roar of the 1920s. The once promising family is finally dashed upon the rocks of the Depression.
