Billy Parsons is a young detective constable who is accused of rape. Awaiting trial in prison he suffers a dreadful assault and barely survives. Plagued by recurrent nightmares, he tries to rebuild his life aided by the only person who believes he is innocent. Intriguingly this is his attending physician. The lovers' tenuous union, fuelled by Billy's need for support from someone he trusts, goes through a roller coaster of emotion, ending abruptly with Billy walking out on his distraught lover.

Months later, the CID team are put on high alert. A brutal murder blights Bedford Town. Very few clues are available, but Billy's farewell note is discovered at the crime scene implicating his former love, Tina, and himself.

Billy's nightmares begin again. His memories flood back, and then a burning realisation erupts in his mind that he wants Tina back. He is angry with himself for running out on her, his whole body aches with desire. The sudden crushing need makes him resolve to find her but at her apartment block he discovers she had been involved in a road traffic accident, and rumours abound that his lover did not survive. Full of grief and remorse, he digs deeper revisiting the hospital to unearth the truth. He encounters resistance from the hospital staff he questions, because he had been a disruptive patient following his attack in prison. Where is Tina? Is she alive? Will he locate her? Who is the killer? Will the killer strike again?
