Excerpt from Watson's Magazine, Vol. 15: September, 1912 The title of the paper is Lord Baltimore's Struggle with the Jesuits a title which of itself suggests that our common histories of Maryland have left much untold. Prof. Dennis discards the opinion that Lord Baltimore's intention was to found an asylum for the Roman Catholics The purpose of the Calverts was chie?y economic and not religious. Avalon, in Newfoundland having proved unprofitable, Calvert sought a more promising field. He knew that he could not succeed without the aid of Protestants but was wise enough to understand that Protestants would not embark in the enterprise unless religious freedom was guaranteed by the proprietary; and that Protestant England with a Parliament of puri tan temper would not for an instant tolerate the erection of a distinctly Roman Catholic government within the bounds of her territorial juris diction. This seems to me an eminently correct statement of the case. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
