He was the author of many scholarly books, including The Southeastern Indians; Knights of Spain, Warriors of the Sun: Hernando de Soto and the South's Ancient Chiefdoms; and Conversations with the High Priest of Coosa, and co-editor of An Early and Strong Sympathy: The Indian Writings of William Gilmore Simms. He was also the author of the historical novel, The Packhorseman.
