The music scholar, composer and editor Ebenezer Prout (1835–1909) is best known for his edition of Handel's Messiah. His classic instructional work on harmony, first published in 1889, quickly became a standard text and ran through no fewer than twenty editions, of which this is the sixteenth, of 1903.
