Pete worked late the night of July 4, 2010 then watched the fireworks with a friend. He drove three miles up a mountain road where his buddies waited. It is a shelf road with a cliff on one side, deep canyon on the other, pitch black at night, but with incredible acoustics. Pete lit and dropped a firework of some magnitude and instinctively jumped backwards, falling one-hundred feet to the canyon floor below. He died instantly from a skull fracture at the age of twenty-one. An EMT friend found him unresponsive, the Mountain Rescue Team and Ouray County Sheriff were summoned, and my journey with death on the mountain began.
