The Cherokeean Herald Newspaper, Rusk, TX. reported that the Cherokee County, Texas sheriff was murdered in August (1939) following a traffic stop. Brunt stopped a car he suspected of transporting beer through the DRY LAW COUNTY in East Texas. As he approached the car, driven by Bootlegger, Isiah "Red" Creel, the male driver opened gunfire, striking the officer in the chest. Although he was severely wounded, Brunt's return shots, killed Creel, and wounded a female passenger. Bill Brunt was the youngest Cherokee County Sheriff in Texas. His wife, Mary Dear Brunt, was the, FIRST, female Sheriff in Cherokee County, Texas, "PISTOL PACKIN' MAMA." She resumed his term of office after his untimely, death in (1939).
