If anyone could play the "poor me" card and have a pity party, Paul would be the one. Yet, he let it go. This is key to living a happy life. The past is not the problem, but rather the fact that some people drag it along, day by day, year after year in self-defeating pity. Holding on to the past is not the path to happiness. I am not denying the pain of the past. We all suffer and must go through the healing process, but we need to "go through" it. Perpetual grieving is an ensnaring weight that kills the hope of future joy.
