The purpose of this eclectic musings, Does A Genius . . ., is to continue to expose others to the African American legacy and talent of Art Tatum. It is my hope that young and old people in his hometown Toledo, Ohio may better understand Tatum's impact and importance as a world-renowned pianist and virtuoso. Although I have written the biographical Art Tatum in Toledo, Ohio, 1909-1932, this book of poems is an artistic tribute to his life and legacy. The poems in this book are compiled from my reflections on his music and on the many Art Tatum stories that have been told to me by other musicians, by his neighbors, friends, and sister, Arlene Tatum. Some readers may find poetry, interviews or cartoons, more accessible as a biographical tool and way of learning about Tatum and later want to do their own research on this legendary artist or perhaps even be inspired to write their own poems. Imelda Hunt teaches at Bowling Green State University in the Africana Studies Department and is the Founder of New Works Writers Series, a black theater and arts organization, presenter of the first major poetry slam in northwest Ohio and ongoing poetry events. Hunt's had unique access to artists and poets with whom she's shared knowledge. Hunt is most keenly aware of author Alice Walker's statement, "We are the ones that they have been waiting for." These experiences with other artists and her classroom interactions with her students help her to continue striving to fulfill the generational commitment that Walker expressed.
