Is there something better than working hard only to pay out a small fortune in bills and interest rates and be forever replacing poor quality products? I believe there is and in Being Human: A Question of Survival the reasons why so many people end up as, dare I say it, wage slaves, are discussed and exposed, and some alternatives offered. Sure, slavery as our history books describe it, has been largely eradicated, but if we are forced by economic circumstances to work for someone else in order to afford a home to live in, are we not still in effect slaves, at least to the economic system? I can't accept life was meant to be as it is at present: days filled with rushing about dealing with stressful situations and worrying about finances and contracts and other perceived-to-be-important issues. Surely, life was meant to be something else. That is the theme of the pages in Being Human. It is about how to extract our thinking from the economic imperative and get back to living connected, enriched lives and protecting the natural world that makes life possible. I believe we need to be enriched by the rewards of activities that are not solely centered on money, wealth and power. Some of my thoughts are combined with the words of a wise elder I met years ago with a view to offering an alternative to chasing money, wealth, power and control. These being the things that bring conflict into our world.
