Max Anderson had a good life. Now retired, he's just finished his novel, inspired by his life as an accountant and auditor. Then, after an early book review in the local newspaper, he's murdered.



Detective Cole Eltie and Detective Allison Bryce intend to find out why. Initially thinking it might have been a home robbery gone wrong, they are about to rule it as that when Max's daughter shares her father's real-life notes regarding his soon-to-be-released novel.



Max had taken inspiration for the book from his work. They knew that. What they didn't know was what Max's work entailed. So when the detectives realize that his work involved characters like alleged gangsters, embezzlers, and white-collar crime, the perimeters of the case widen. Now, rather than a home invasion, the detectives believe it was a premeditated murder.
