Jo was 16 years old when she entered Pine Breeze Tuberculosis Sanatorium in Chattanooga, Tennessee in 1946.  Placed in the terminal wing known as "death row",  Jo had advanced tuberculosis in both lungs. She believed her dreams of becoming a missionary were dashed when she was sent to Pine Breeze, but Jo quickly learned that she could serve as a missionary wherever God placed her.
