Meaghan O'Brien should have returned to Pavel Andrasko in the Old Town Square in the heart of Prague. Instead, she stayed in Berlin and chose a stable and intelligent future. She remembers their innocent love affair in the colorful city of Karlovy Vary during her fellowship to Czechoslovakia in the spring of 1992. She begins to understand the past as she pursues a meaningless affair with an anonymous man amidst the small town where Penn State University resides. Through her story, she is courageous enough to question the abusive relationship she had justified was the right choice all those years ago. Through her struggles standing up against the restraints of domestic abuse, Meaghan realizes that love isn't always the smart choice. She learns that she should have lived with her heart and not with her mind. Surrounded by folklore and the rich history of Germany and Czechoslovakia, Meaghan finds that love, like anything unattainable for the cursed, is as difficult as finding a needle in a haystack, or a pearl in an oyster, or even more so, a four-leaf clover in a field of Karlovy Vary.
