Yannick and his sister, Amma, have a relatively peaceful existence in West Africa, despite their status as slaves. They share a close relationship, but all's about to be undone. Yannick is sold to slavers and taken across the Atlantic, promising to return to his sister. Arriving in North Carolina, he is sold on and ends up serving in the household of a tobacco plantation. There he meets a kindly old slave and they form a bond as he struggles to come to terms with his new life. However, the boy discovers that all is not as it seems at the plantation.
