The story takes place in a world where, for purpose of population control, the monetary system has been replaced with time. Time is the medium of exchange. Each citizen is fitted with a time tracker that monitors the amount of time in said citizen's "time bank". Like money, a citizen can acquire 'time' through work, inheritence, gift etc. and can likewise spend or lose time by way of purchases, mistakes, disasters, bad investments, failure etc. Into this astonishing world comes Teaser Broadnax, an unknowing participant in a ground-breaking experiment where the consequence of poverty . . . is death.
